At Envesca we believe that everyone should learn basic first aid techniques. You never know when you might need them - you could be at home, at work, at school or on holiday. Basic first aid really can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved. Whether it's a minor situation or something more serious, first aid knowledge will give you the confidence to act. You could be the difference between life and death.
The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to ensure their employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work.
All workplaces need to appoint someone to take charge of first aid arrangements. This applies even if you are self-employed or a sole trader. The exact level of first aid cover and the first aid training course you need will be determined by a first aid needs analysis. Failure to comply with these guidelines, or a disregard for the safety of your staff could result in substantial fines or even prosecution.
As the employer, the regulations require you to make an assessment of first aid needs appropriate to the circumstances within your workplace. You need to consider things like:
• Types of hazards found in your workplace• Number of employees and their experience• Previous accident and ill-health records• Working arrangements• Whether the general public visit your premises
Further help and guidance on doing a First Aid Needs Analysis can be found on the HSE website.
The minimum first-aid provision on any work site is:
• a suitably stocked first-aid box • an appointed person to take charge of first-aid arrangements • information for employees about first-aid arrangements
It is important to remember that accidents and illness can happen at any time. First-aid provision needs to be available at all times people are at work.
If you fail to meet your legal obligations not only could you incur substantial fines or prosecution but you could also have the loss of someone’s life on your conscious.
You can prevent of all this by ensuring you and your staff have received first aid training. There are a number of different ways that Envesca can help you meet your obligations and give you peace of mind that you are doing everything you need to do.
Whether you would prefer your staff to attend one of our Open First Aid Training Courses or you would like us to carry out In-Company First Aid Training whereby bespoke First Aid training can be provided at your premises and all your team can be trained at once. There is also an option to do online learning with our CIEH e-Learning courses.
Our one day Level 2 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work course is suitable for employers who have identified a requirement for Emergency First Aid at Work in their First Aid Needs Assessment. The focus of the course is on preventing situations from becoming worse and learning the vital life saving skills that a trained first aider can use until additional help arrives.
We also offer an Introduction to First Aid as an e-Learning option.
If you identify that a more in-depth course is required, our three day Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work course will provide the first aider with the skills required to give effective life support, diagnose and treat injuries or illness and maintain care and comfort for the casualty. The emphasis is placed on dealing with life threatening situations to help ensure that the casualty is kept alive until professional help arrives.
If you work with young children, our two day Level 2 Award in Paediatric First Aid course may be more suitable as this is primarily aimed at those working in childcare settings, but it will be useful for anyone with responsibility for caring for infants and children.
Although all the above qualifications are valid for three years, the HSE recommend that a half day First Aid Update course is taken every year to help First Aiders maintain their basic skills and keep up to date with any changes to first-aid procedures and how they might impact their role.
