Your legal duty
Under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, employers must provide suitable information, instruction, training and supervision to help employees work safely. Your legal duties
Is health and safety training a legal requirement in the UK?
Yes. The law requires you to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare of your employees, and to provide whatever information, instruction, training and supervision is necessary. A formal qualification is not always required, but you must be able to demonstrate that staff are competent to work safely.
What health and safety training does my business need?
It depends on the type of work you do, the risks your employees face and their level of responsibility. You have a legal duty to ensure staff receive the training they need to work safely.
For most employees, a Level 1 or Level 2 course provides a good foundation. Supervisors and managers often benefit from Level 3 Health and Safety or IOSH Managing Safely, while senior managers may need a Level 4 qualification or Health and Safety for Directors and Senior Managers.
Depending on your business, you may also need specialist training in areas such as risk assessment, manual handling, COSHH, working at height, fire safety, asbestos awareness or legionella.

What happens if employees do not receive health and safety training?
Employees without appropriate training are more likely to make mistakes that lead to accidents, injuries, work-related ill health or damage to property. They may also be unaware of the risks in their role or the safe procedures they should follow.
For employers, failing to provide suitable training can breach UK health and safety law. If an incident occurs, your business could face enforcement action, unlimited fines, prosecution, higher insurance costs and reputational damage. It may also be difficult to demonstrate that you took reasonable steps to protect your employees.
Choosing and attending a course
What is the difference between IOSH Managing Safely and Highfield Level 3 Health and Safety?
Both are excellent qualifications for supervisors and managers, but they have slightly different focuses.
IOSH Managing Safely is designed specifically for managers and supervisors in any industry. It gives a practical understanding of everyday health and safety management, helping managers identify hazards, assess risks and meet their legal responsibilities. It is globally recognised and particularly popular with larger organisations.
Highfield Level 3 Health and Safety covers many of the same topics but goes into greater detail on UK legislation, employer and employee responsibilities, and how to develop and maintain safe working practices. It leads to a regulated qualification on the Regulated Qualifications Framework, making it popular where a more in-depth understanding is needed.

How long does health and safety training take?
It depends on the level and course. As a guide, Level 1 takes around half a day, Level 2 courses including risk assessment, manual handling and COSHH typically run half a day to one day, Level 3 usually takes three days, IOSH Managing Safely runs over three days, and Level 4 generally takes five days plus an examination.
Can health and safety training be completed online or at our workplace?
Yes. Train online through self-paced eLearning or live virtual courses via Zoom, both leading to a nationally recognised qualification. We can also deliver at your premises anywhere in the UK, tailored to your business and its real workplace risks.
How much does health and safety training cost?
Cost depends on the type of course, qualification level, delivery method and the number of people being trained. Short awareness courses such as manual handling or COSHH are typically less expensive than nationally recognised qualifications like IOSH Managing Safely or Level 4 Health and Safety.
If you are training several employees, onsite training at your premises is often the most cost-effective option, as a single trainer can deliver to your whole team. For individuals, public classroom or virtual courses usually offer the best value, while eLearning is a flexible, affordable solution for many awareness-level courses.
When comparing prices, look beyond the course fee. Consider what is included, such as training materials, examination fees, certificates and post-course support, as well as the experience and accreditation of the provider.

Certificates, records and renewals
How often should health and safety training be refreshed?
There is no single legal renewal period, but you must ensure staff remain competent. IOSH recommends renewing Managing Safely every three years, and refresher training should be considered whenever legislation changes, job roles change, or an incident or audit highlights a need.
How long is a health and safety certificate valid?
Most health and safety qualifications do not carry a formal expiry date. Your IOSH Managing Safely certificate and your Highfield Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications remain valid once achieved, so there is no requalification deadline hanging over you.
What does need to stay current is competence. The Health and Safety Executive expects the people responsible for safety in your business to have up to date knowledge, and legislation, guidance and your own risk profile all change over time. IOSH recommends a refresher every three years for that reason, and we would suggest the same across most subjects.
The practical answer is to treat your certificates as evidence of what someone has learned, not as proof that they are still competent today. If a role has changed, if your risks have changed or if it has been a few years, a refresher is worth booking. We can review what your team holds and tell you what genuinely needs updating.
Do we need to keep records of health and safety training?
Yes, and it is one of the simplest things you can get right. If an inspector visits or an incident is investigated, your training records are how you demonstrate that your staff were properly trained. Without them, you are relying on memory to prove due diligence, which rarely goes well.
Keep a record of who attended, what they completed, when they completed it and when a refresher is due. Certificates alone are not enough, because they show what happened but not what is coming up.
