Which Food Safety Training Course Do You Need

Food safety training is an essential part of training for all food handlers. However, it can be hard to know what level of training is required for each employee. Is it necessary for everyone to have the same amount of training in every role?

Levels of Food Safety Training

When it comes to food safety training, the level of training necessary depends on what role an employee is doing and their level of involvement with food. There are four different levels of food safety training available to employees, 1,2,3,4. Some of these are aimed at entry-level members of staff, while some are more suitable for those in management positions who require a wider understanding of current legislation and compliance issues.

Level 1

Level 1 food safety training is suitable for those who require basic training and who are not involved in handling high-risk food. It is not suitable for anyone who will be handling, preparing or cooking food. This course covers such issues as personal hygiene, cleaning and reducing cross-contamination. This level of training will also teach staff how to identify key food safety issues.

Level 2

If your staff requires more advanced knowledge than Level 1 food safety & hygiene training can provide, then Level 2 food safety training may be necessary. This course is suitable for any staff member who works in an environment where food is being cooked, prepared and handled. As well as covering the basics, it involves more in-depth knowledge about the safe preparation, storage and handling of foods.

Level 3

In some areas, providing your staff with even more specialised and in-depth knowledge of food safety practices may be necessary. Level 3 food safety training is aimed at those in higher positions within companies, such as managers, supervisors and business owners who work in the food industry. This empowers these managers to have a wide-reaching knowledge of food safety standards and food safety compliance training.

Level 4

If you’re a manager responsible for planning and implementing food safety management programmes, then the Level 4 food safety training course will enhance your delivery of this to other team members. This will enable you to identify, prevent and control any potential food safety hazards and how to take appropriate action. If you wish to register with an awarding body for accredited qualifications, gaining a Level 4 qualification is essential.

With this in mind, you should have a broader awareness of the type of food safety training you will need to provide for your employees and potentially for yourself. Envesca is a leading expert in providing food safety training at all levels, and we understand that each company is different. Our courses can be tailored to meet your individual needs – so get in touch to see how we can help you.

The four levels of food safety courses are designed to promote the highest standards of food safety and complement the guidelines issued by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).
