What’s It About?
This five-day Level 4 Health and Safety course is designed for managers and supervisors who need a deeper understanding of how to manage health and safety effectively in the workplace. It leads to the recognised Highfield Level 4 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace (RQF) qualification and is suitable for people already working at management or supervisory level, as well as those preparing to take on greater health and safety responsibility.
Throughout the Level 4 Health and Safety course, you’ll build your understanding of health and safety law, management responsibilities and what good health and safety management looks like in practice. You’ll explore risk assessment, safe systems of work, health and safety policies, accident and incident investigation, monitoring and reviewing performance, as well as a wide range of workplace hazards.
More importantly, you’ll learn how to apply that knowledge in the workplace, helping you make better decisions, identify where improvements are needed and feel more confident taking responsibility for health and safety within your organisation.
The Level 4 Health and Safety qualification is assessed in two parts. You’ll complete a risk assessment and construct a safe system of work, followed by a three-hour written case-study examination. You’ll need to successfully complete both parts to achieve the qualification.

How Long Is The Qualification Valid?
The Highfield Level 4 Health and Safety in the Workplace qualification does not have a fixed expiry date, so once you have achieved the qualification, you do not need to retake it simply because a set number of years has passed.
Highfield Qualifications do not state a renewal or requalification period. However, health and safety legislation, guidance and workplace practices can change, so it’s important to keep your knowledge up to date through ongoing learning and refresher training where appropriate. If your role involves significant responsibility for health and safety, we’d recommend regularly reviewing your knowledge so you continue to feel confident that the advice and decisions you make reflect current good practice.
How You'll Be Assessed And Certified
The Level 4 Health and Safety qualification is assessed in two parts, giving you the opportunity to show that you can both apply what you’ve learned in practice and demonstrate your knowledge in a written examination.
First, you’ll complete a risk assessment and develop a safe system of work, which will be assessed by your trainer and then moderated by Highfield.
You’ll also sit a three-hour written case-study based examination, where you’ll apply your health and safety knowledge to a workplace scenario.
To achieve the qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete both parts of the assessment. The written examination has a 60% pass mark, with Merit awarded at 70% and Distinction at 80%.
Once you’ve passed both elements, you’ll receive the Highfield Level 4 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace certificate, giving you a recognised qualification that reflects your ability to manage health and safety at a more advanced level.
