Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Mental Health First Aid Refresher
What's It About?
This one-day Mental Health First Aid Refresher course is designed for people who already hold the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Mental Health First Aid in the Workplace and need to refresh their knowledge, rebuild confidence and renew their qualification before it expires. The qualification is valid for three years, and Qualsafe allows existing qualification holders to complete a shorter requalification course rather than repeating the full 14-hour programme.
You’ll revisit the key skills and knowledge you need as a Mental Health First Aider, including how to recognise when someone may be struggling, start a supportive conversation, listen without judgement and signpost them towards appropriate help.
The course also refreshes the important boundaries of your role. You’re there to listen, support and signpost rather than diagnose, helping you feel clear about what you can do and when professional support is needed.
It’s a practical way to bring your knowledge back up to date, refresh skills you may not use every day and make sure you continue to feel confident in your role as a Mental Health First Aider.
If you haven’t completed the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Mental Health First Aid in the Workplace before, you’ll need to complete the full course first.
What Will You Gain?
By the end of the course, you’ll have refreshed your understanding of the role and responsibilities of a Mental Health First Aider, including the importance of knowing your own limits, listening without judgement and supporting rather than diagnosing.
You’ll also revisit the key responsibilities employers have for managing mental health and work-related stress, with guidance from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) helping you understand how this fits into the wider workplace approach.
You’ll rebuild your confidence to recognise when someone may be struggling, start a supportive conversation and know how to respond appropriately, including when and where to signpost someone towards reliable professional or specialist support.
On returning to the workplace, you’ll feel better prepared and more confident to support colleagues when they need it, while being clear about where your role as a Mental Health First Aider begins and ends.
Who Should Attend?
This Mental Health First Aid Refresher course is for people who have already completed the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Mental Health First Aid in the Workplace and want to refresh their knowledge, rebuild confidence and keep their qualification current. Qualsafe requires learners to retake the qualification before their existing certificate expires.
It is particularly suitable for:
- Line managers
- Supervisors
- Team leaders
- Heads of department
- HR professionals
- Managers with responsibility for staff wellbeing
- Existing Mental Health First Aiders who want to continue in the role
If your qualification is approaching its three-year expiry date, this shorter refresher course gives you the opportunity to update your knowledge and renew your qualification without repeating the full two-day programme.
If you’re new to the subject and simply want to build your understanding of mental health in the workplace, our Qualsafe Level 2 Award in Understanding Mental Health in the Workplace may be a better place to start. If you want to become a qualified Mental Health First Aider, you’ll need to complete the full Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Mental Health First Aid in the Workplace first.
Why’s It Important?
Mental health problems can affect anyone, and the impact can be significant for both the individual and the workplace. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) continues to report that work-related stress, depression and anxiety account for a substantial proportion of work-related ill health and lost working days.
Employers also have a legal duty to protect workers from work-related stress by assessing the risks and taking appropriate action. The HSE Management Standards provide practical guidance to help organisations identify and manage some of the main causes of stress at work.
There is a strong business case for providing the right support too. Research from Deloitte has consistently shown that investment in employee mental health can deliver a positive return for employers through benefits such as improved productivity, reduced absence and better staff retention.
Refreshing your Mental Health First Aid knowledge helps make sure you continue to feel confident recognising when someone may be struggling, starting a supportive conversation and knowing where to signpost them for further help. It also helps keep mental health part of everyday workplace conversations rather than something people feel uncomfortable talking about.
