Virtual training has been a game-changer for training companies and delegates alike. Gone are the hours spent commuting only to sit in a soulless conference room sipping lukewarm tea. (Although Envesca’s in-person training isn’t a bit like this!)

Virtual, live training brings countless benefits. Able to attend sessions from the comfort of their homes and offices, delegates can choose flexible learning that fits in with their busy lives without sacrificing the communication and networking that goes with in-person training.

Whether you’re new to virtual learning or considering it for your next course, there are probably things you’re curious about. In this blog, we tackle the top 20 questions we get asked as experienced virtual trainers to help you get started.

Getting Started With Virtual Training

1. What is virtual training via Zoom?

Virtual training via Zoom allows you to participate in live, instructor-led courses from anywhere with an internet connection. Live training, compared to recorded sessions, combines real-time interaction with the flexibility of remote access, making professional development more accessible to individuals with busy schedules and geographical limitations.

The Zoom platform enables delegates to ask questions, join discussions, and even work collaboratively in breakout rooms, making the learning experience dynamic and engaging. Features such as screen sharing, polls, and Q&A tools help trainers deliver content effectively while accommodating different learning styles and preferences.

2. How does virtual training via Zoom work?

To participate in a virtual training course on Zoom you will need a PC, laptop or other smart device with a camera and a microphone. Headphones are recommended if you’ll be joining from a busy or noisy environment. Joining the training session is as simple as clicking a link provided by email, which you’ll receive in plenty of time to eliminate last-minute stress.

3. Can I attend virtual training sessions via Zoom on my mobile device or tablet?

Yes! Zoom has mobile apps available for both iOS and Android devices. However, for the best learning experience, we recommend using a device with a larger screen, like a laptop or desktop computer. This is because it is easier to watch presentations, participate in discussions, and effectively use platform features like the chat.

4. How do I join a virtual training session via Zoom?

Once you have registered for your course, you will receive an email with a meeting link. Before your course begins, make sure you have downloaded the Zoom app or found the Zoom website via your web browser. To join the training session, click the link in your email at the scheduled time. You may also be required to enter a meeting ID or password; this information can be found in the email, too.

Top tip: Test your camera, microphone and internet connection before your session is due to start to make sure everything is working smoothly.

5. Do I need a Zoom account to attend a virtual training session?

No, you don’t need a Zoom account to join a virtual training session. To participate as a guest, you simply need to click the meeting link provided in the email.

However, if you will be attending multiple training sessions or using the Zoom platform regularly, creating a free account enables you to save your preferences, schedule your own meetings and access additional features.

Technical Aspects Of Virtual Training

6. Is it safe to attend virtual training sessions via Zoom?

Yes, accessing virtual training via Zoom is extremely safe. Zoom employs robust security measures like encryption and password protection to ensure participants can get involved safely and securely. To further protect your privacy, avoid having other people, like colleagues or family members, in direct view of the camera. Zoom provides options to blur your background, and even use a virtual background, to help minimise distractions and ensure confidentiality.

7. How do I ensure that my internet connection is strong enough for virtual training sessions via Zoom?

To get the best out of your virtual learning experience, opt for a stable broadband connection rather than relying on mobile data. An internet speed of at least 2 Mbps should be fast enough, and you can test your internet speed using websites such as Speedtest.net. If you are experiencing a weak connection, try moving closer to your router or connecting via an Ethernet cable.

8. What equipment do I need for attending virtual training sessions via Zoom?

You will need a computer, laptop or mobile device with good internet access to participate in virtual training. A camera and microphone are essential for Envesca’s interactive sessions; these are built into many modern devices but can also be hooked up externally. A headset or pair of headphones can be useful if you’ll be participating in a noisy environment too.

Top tip: Don’t forget a notepad and pen to scribble important learning points down during your session.

Interacting And Learning In A Virtual Environment

9. Can I interact with the trainer and other attendees during the virtual training session via Zoom?

Yes, Zoom is designed to support interactivity. With tools like chat, Q&A and breakout rooms, dialogue between trainers and participants is encouraged to enhance the learning experience through sharing thoughts, feelings and perspectives.

10. How long are the typical virtual training sessions via Zoom?

The length of a training session varies depending on the course. Some 1-day courses consist of a single session including breaks, whereas courses spanning multiple dates require participants to log in and out at scheduled times. You will receive details on timings and breaks when you register for your course.

11. Will I receive any materials or handouts for the virtual training session via Zoom?

Yes. Course materials, such as PowerPoint slides, handouts and reference documents will be found in the Envesca Hub. A link to the hub will be sent to you via email and you will be asked to register ahead of the session. These resources have been designed to infuse your learning and provide valuable information for future reference once the course is over.

Costs, Recordings, and Technical Issues

12. How much does it cost to attend a virtual training session via Zoom?

Costs vary depending on the course. For example, Envesca’s Level 3 Award in Allergen Management is a one-day course costing £265, whereas the Level 4 Award in Food Safety spans 5 days and costs £990.

You can find price information for Envesca’s upcoming training courses here.

13. Can I record the virtual training session for future reference?

No, recording is not permitted due to copyright restrictions on Envesca’s course content. However, you are encouraged to take notes, and the course materials provided are yours to keep.

14. What happens if there are technical difficulties during the virtual training session via Zoom?

If you experience technical issues, Envesca’s team will assist you in resolving them as quickly as possible so that your learning experience can continue smoothly. If the trainers themselves experience technical difficulties, they may take a short break to ensure minimal disruption whilst they address the issue.

Top tip: Test your setup before the session begins to prevent unnecessary disruption.

Specifics And Customisation

15. Are there any prerequisites required before attending a specific virtual training session via Zoom?

Different courses have different prerequisites, such as prior knowledge or specific certifications. These requirements are outlined in the course fact sheet which can be easily downloaded from your chosen course’s webpage.

Zoom Features And Feedback

19. Is there a limit on the number of meetings per day on the free version of Zoom?

As an attendee, you are not limited to the number of meetings you can join. Zoom’s free hosting limits only apply to users scheduling their own meetings.

At the end of each session, the trainer will provide an opportunity for candidates to share feedback. You can also email or call Envesca directly to let us know how you found your learning experience.
