When Sue and Simon Ellis founded Envesca in 1996, they weren’t planning on a global pandemic, the rise of virtual training or passing knowledge on to people in the Falkland Islands.
You can’t plan for everything, after all.
But what you can do is build the foundations of a business that’s strong enough to handle whatever’s on the horizon.
Thirty years ago, that’s exactly where Envesca started. Through cash-flow crises, technological upheaval, and funding cuts (to name but a few hurdles!), we have persisted. We have forged on and figured it out along the way. And it’s taught us more than any MBA programme.
Here’s what 30 years in business has taught us.
Survival Comes Before Strategy
In the early days of starting a business, grand strategy doesn’t matter as much as making payroll.
When Sue and Simon founded Envesca, they were at a point of redundancy. The first challenge? Cash flow.
What We Learned
- Responsiveness works wonders. For Envesca, regulatory changes, such as the 1996 food hygiene regulations, have created opportunities that have allowed us to meet urgent training needs.
- Cash flow matters as much as capability. This means that you can be absolutely phenomenal at what you do… And still go bust.
- Diversification isn’t always strategic; sometimes it just helps you stay relevant. Envesca added health and safety training to its repertoire to increase business stability.
- Persistence matters more than brilliance.
European Social Funding supported Envesca’s early growth. When it ended, the business faced a critical moment that forced us to rethink our pricing structure to survive.
The Lesson
Perfect strategy means nothing if you can’t keep the lights on.
It’s crucial to focus on the fundamentals first. That means cash flow, customer relationships, and problem-solving. Let strategy come later.
Your People Are Your Greatest Asset (And Your Greatest Investment)
Envesca’s first team member stayed in the company for 20 years. And within our current team, multiple employees have been with us for over 15 years, and two recently celebrated 10 years.
One of our team began as a part-time office administrator and is now Safeguard Manager, running consultancy services – 15 years later!
What does this tell us? People shape the business, and they’re integral to success.
What We Learned
- Hire good people (and look after them!)
- Staff development creates loyalty. If you invest in your people, they invest back.
- You don’t have to know everything, but you do need access to those who do. Exceptional professional partners fill knowledge gaps.
- The people around you matter. Guidance from mentors like Nigel Botterill, founder of Entrepreneur’s Circle, reshaped Envesca’s approach to growth.
The Lesson
People, both your team and your customers, are relationships, not resources.
The person you hire could be running your business in 15 years. The customer you support well day to day is more likely to follow you as they move between companies. Invest accordingly, and you will reap the benefits.
Systems and Measurement Drive Everything
In the early days, inconsistent follow-up cost Envesca many opportunities. We hadn’t knuckled down on handling leads consistently, and even though we were doing great work, it wasn’t being captured, measured or repeated reliably.
To fix it, we introduced documented processes and clear responsibilities across the business. Interventions like individual scorecards brought accountability and focus to every single team member, improving quality across the board.
In addition to offering a 27-second automated callback from our website, we now call back online enquiries within 10 minutes and issue proposals within 24 hours. Measurement became non-negotiable for us: If we couldn’t measure it, we couldn’t manage it.
What We Learned
- Inconsistency costs your business opportunities
- Effective systems and processes create consistency and reduce stress
- Measurement and accountability drive behaviour
- Speed matters in modern business. Customers expect rapid responses.
- Marketing is not optional – don’t ignore it!
The Lesson
An informal approach will only get you so far – and that distance can feel great! But then you get stuck. Savvy systems are the beating heart of scalable growth, enabling you to document what works and measure what matters.
Proof Beats Promotion Every Time
Reputation is hands down your biggest asset. 330+ five-star reviews
For Envesca, that reputation has been built through 330+ five-star reviews and 15 business awards, including our first CIEH award in 2010. We collected this one at the Houses of Parliament, boosting both our confidence and our visibility in one fell swoop.
We were also the first CIEH training centre to win Best Training Centre two years running.
What We Learned
- What customers have to say matters. Social proof wins against self-promotion.
- Awards build credibility fast.
- Getting customers is important, but keeping them is critical.
- Great service creates return business. This is because strong relationships forge consistent repeat work and referrals.
Outstanding customer service simply isn’t optional anymore. At Envesca, we now create ‘wow moments’ for our customers, celebrating exam successes, offering thanks and recognising achievements. This steadily builds strong, loyal relationships over time. And these relationships outlast job titles because customers follow people they trust.
The Lesson
Stop talking the talk and walk the walk instead. Demonstrate how great you are! Invest in genuine customer success, collect fantastic testimonials and build solid relationships.
The Next Challenge Is Always Coming
We’ve worked through some significant changes at Envesca.
In 1996, we experienced the E.coli crisis, as well as new food labelling regulations. The early 2000s saw our European funding come to an end. 2020? Well, that was the global pandemic! And in 2026, new challenges are emerging, like BRCGS Issue 10, Martyn’s Law, lithium-ion battery risks, EV charging infrastructure and hybrid working challenges to name but a few.
And there’s always going to be more in this fast-changing world of ours.
What We Learned
- Evolution and adaptation are continuous practices.
- Change is rarely comfy (but it’s always necessary).
- Persistence matters more than brilliance when faced with adversity.
- Businesses that embrace change survive.
The Lesson
Stop waiting for stability. You’re unlikely to find it! Instead, build an adaptable business that invests in learning and frames change as an opportunity.
What 30 Years Really Teaches You
Thirty years haven’t shown us how to predict the future. It’s taught us that you can’t.
Who knows what’s around the corner?
The best way to get ahead of the game is to prepare. Build strong foundations with cash-flow discipline, adaptable technology, loyal people, robust systems, genuine customer relationships, and a commitment to continuous evolution.
We at Envesca want to offer a huge thank you to every customer who has trusted us, every team member who has believed in our company and every partner who has supported us over these three decades. You are all part of Envesca’s story, and you’re the reason these lessons exist. Here’s to the next 30 years of learning!
