What’s It About?
This Highfield Level 1 Award in the Principles of Fire Safety Awareness gives candidates a clear, practical introduction to workplace fire safety and the confidence to recognise common fire risks and respond appropriately if something goes wrong.
Delivered by experienced trainers who use practical examples to make the course relevant to your workplace, it helps candidates understand their basic responsibilities under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, including how fires can start, how to reduce the risk and what to do during an evacuation.
Candidates also take part in a live fire extinguisher practical, giving them the opportunity to experience using real fire-fighting equipment safely and understand when its use may be appropriate.
It’s a straightforward, nationally recognised qualification for anyone who needs a good grounding in fire safety without the additional responsibilities of a Fire Marshal or Fire Warden role.

What Will You Gain?
By the end of the course, you’ll understand the basic steps you can take to help prevent fires from starting and what to do if a fire does occur.
You’ll learn how to recognise common fire hazards, follow workplace fire safety procedures and respond appropriately during an emergency.
You’ll also take part in a live fire extinguisher practical, giving you hands-on experience of using fire-fighting equipment safely and helping you understand when it may be appropriate to use it and when the safest action is to evacuate and raise the alarm.
You’ll leave with greater confidence, a nationally recognised qualification and practical fire safety knowledge you can use straight away at work.
Who Should Attend?
This half-day Level 1 Fire Safety Awareness course is ideal for employees who need a basic understanding of workplace fire safety, whatever the size or type of organisation they work in.
It is suitable for people who need to understand common fire risks, follow workplace fire procedures and know what to do if a fire occurs.
This course is not intended for employees with specific fire safety responsibilities, such as Fire Marshals, Fire Wardens, Managers, Team Leaders or Supervisors. For those roles, our Highfield Level 2 Award in Fire Safety is the more appropriate choice.
Why’s It Important?
Employers have a legal duty under fire safety legislation to provide employees with appropriate fire safety information, instruction and training.
This training helps your team understand how fires can start, what they can do to reduce the risk, and how to respond safely if a fire occurs.
Giving everyone a good basic understanding of fire safety helps you meet your legal responsibilities, supports safer working practices and gives employees greater confidence about what to do in an emergency.
How Long Is The Qualification Valid?
Highfield recommends that fire safety awareness training is refreshed at least every three years to help candidates keep their knowledge up to date and maintain confidence in their role.
How You'll Be Assessed And Certified
At the end of the Fire Safety Awareness course, candidates will complete a 15-question multiple-choice examination, which must be completed within 30 minutes. The assessment checks their understanding of the key fire safety principles covered during the day, and the pass mark is 9 out of 15.
Completed examination papers are sent to Highfield Qualifications for marking and certification. This process normally takes around 7–14 days.
Once the results have been confirmed, the results and PDF certificates are sent to the person who originally booked the training.
