Qualsafe Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work Requalification

What’s It About?

This two-day First Aid at Work Requalification course is designed for existing workplace first aiders who need to refresh their knowledge, practise their practical skills and renew their qualification.

You’ll revisit the key areas of first aid at work, update your knowledge in line with current guidance and have plenty of opportunity to practise the essential skills you may need in a real emergency.

The course combines practical, hands-on learning with revision of the underpinning knowledge, helping you feel confident, prepared and ready to continue your role as a workplace first aider.

If you don’t already hold a First Aid at Work qualification, you’ll need to complete the three-day Qualsafe Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work course before taking this requalification course.

What Will You Gain?

By the end of the course, you’ll have refreshed your first aid knowledge, updated your practical skills and renewed the confidence you need to continue in your role as a workplace first aider.

As this is a requalification course, you’ll revisit the skills and knowledge covered in the three-day First Aid at Work qualification, but over two days. The course moves at a faster pace and builds on what you already know and the experience you’ve gained as a qualified first aider.

You’ll refresh your ability to assess an emergency, provide CPR and use an AED, manage an unconscious or choking casualty, control bleeding and shock, and carry out a secondary survey. You’ll also revisit how to respond to a wider range of workplace injuries and medical emergencies, including fractures, head and spinal injuries, burns, eye injuries, poisoning and anaphylaxis.

Most importantly, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to practise the skills you may not have used since your last course, helping you return to the workplace feeling prepared, confident and ready to respond quickly and appropriately when someone needs help.

Who Should Attend?

This two-day First Aid at Work Requalification course is ideal for existing workplace first aiders who already hold a First Aid at Work certificate and need to renew their qualification.

It’s best to complete the course before your current certificate expires, so you can keep your qualification up to date and continue in your first aider role without a gap.

If your certificate has already expired, you may still be able to take the two-day requalification course. However, if it expired more than one month ago, the full three-day First Aid at Work course may be the better option.

A Note About the Practical Training

First aid training is practical, so you’ll need to be physically able to take part in activities such as CPR and placing a casualty into the recovery position at floor level.

We recommend wearing comfortable clothing and flat, practical footwear so you can take part safely and comfortably.

If you have a medical condition, disability or mobility issue that could affect your ability to complete the practical assessments, please talk to us before booking. We’ll be happy to discuss your needs and any reasonable adjustments that may be available.

Why’s It Important?

Having the right first aid arrangements in place means someone is ready to respond if an employee is injured or suddenly becomes unwell at work.

Under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, employers need to make sure they have adequate and appropriate first aid provision for their workplace. For businesses where a qualified First Aid at Work first aider forms part of those arrangements, keeping that person’s knowledge, practical skills and qualification up to date is important. The Qualsafe qualification is specifically designed to prepare people to act as workplace first aiders.

First aid skills can fade when they aren’t used regularly. Requalification gives existing first aiders the opportunity to refresh their knowledge, practise essential skills and make sure they are confident responding to a real emergency.

The course content is based on current recommendations from the Resuscitation Council (UK), helping make sure the first aid skills you refresh reflect accepted good practice.

The First Aid at Work qualification is valid for three years, and Qualsafe advises first aiders to requalify before their certificate expires. Once a certificate has expired, the individual is no longer considered competent to act as a workplace first aider, so planning renewal in good time helps you avoid an unexpected gap in your first aid cover.

Keeping your first aiders qualified, confident and ready to respond helps you meet your responsibilities and gives everyone in your workplace greater reassurance that help is there when it’s needed.

Key Topics

How Long Is The Qualification Valid?

Once you successfully complete the two-day First Aid at Work Requalification course, your renewed qualification is valid for another three years.

Before those three years are up, you can normally renew your qualification again by completing another two-day First Aid at Work Requalification course, you don’t need to go back and complete the full three-day course each time, provided you still meet the requalification requirements.

Qualsafe also recommends annual refresher training between requalification courses to help keep your knowledge and practical skills fresh and maintain confidence in an emergency.

How You'll Be Assessed And Certified

Throughout the course, candidates will complete seven practical assessments, giving them the opportunity to demonstrate the first aid skills they have refreshed and practised. These cover:

  • CPR and the safe use of an AED
  • Choking
  • Managing an unconscious casualty
  • Wounds, bleeding and shock
  • Carrying out a secondary survey
  • Managing fractures
  • Managing anaphylaxis

Qualsafe also includes an optional practical assessment in catastrophic bleeding.

Candidates will also complete two multiple-choice theory assessments:

  • Unit 1: 15 questions, with 25 minutes to complete the paper and a pass mark of 11 out of 15
  • Unit 2: 25 questions, with 40 minutes to complete the paper and a pass mark of 18 out of 25

All mandatory practical assessments and both theory papers must be passed to achieve the qualification.

Once the First Aid at Work Requalification course and assessments have been successfully completed, the results are submitted to Qualsafe Awards for certification. Successful candidates receive a renewed Qualsafe Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF) certificate, which is valid for another three years.

Once the results and PDF certificates are available, we’ll send them to the person who originally booked the training.
