What’s It About?
This Level 2 Food Safety for Catering course gives you a practical understanding of the food safety and hygiene practices you need when preparing, cooking, serving and handling food in a catering environment.

The course is designed to help you understand your own food safety responsibilities and give you the confidence to follow safe working practices throughout the food journey, from delivery and storage through to preparation, cooking, serving and transport.
What Will You Gain?
By the end of the Level 2 Food Safety for Catering course, you’ll have a clearer understanding of the food safety and hygiene practices you need to follow when preparing, cooking, serving and handling food.
You’ll learn how to maintain good personal hygiene, keep work areas and equipment clean, prevent contamination and cross-contamination, control food temperatures and handle food safely. You’ll also understand how to recognise and report food safety hazards, pest activity and food spoilage.

Who Should Attend?
The Level 2 Food Safety for Catering course is ideal for anyone who prepares, cooks, serves, stores or handles food as part of their job. It is particularly suitable for people working in catering environments such as:
- Hotels
- Restaurants
- Pubs and bars
- Cafés
- Takeaways
- Schools and colleges
- Care homes and hospitals.
The qualification covers food safety throughout storage, preparation, cooking, service and handling.
It is also a useful foundation alongside HACCP training, helping employees understand the everyday food hygiene and safe handling practices that support good food safety controls.
If you work in a catering environment but do not routinely prepare or handle food, for example in a lower-risk support role, our Level 1 Food Safety for Catering course may be a better starting point.
Food safety training should reflect the environment you actually work in. If you work in food manufacturing, our Level 2 Food Safety for Manufacturing course would be more appropriate. If you work in food retail, choose our Level 2 Food Safety for Retail course instead.
Why’s It Important?
Good food safety depends on everyone who handles food understanding the part they play in keeping it safe. In a catering environment, everyday actions such as handwashing, preventing cross-contamination and controlling food temperatures can make a real difference.
Food businesses must make sure that food handlers are supervised, instructed and/or trained in food hygiene in a way that is appropriate to the work they do. A formal qualification is not always a legal requirement, but employees do need the knowledge and skills to carry out their role safely.
The Level 2 Food Safety for Catering course gives food handlers practical knowledge of personal hygiene, cleaning, contamination and cross-contamination, pest control, safe storage and temperature control, as well as safe practices for preparing, cooking, chilling, reheating, serving and transporting food.
Good training is not simply about meeting a legal requirement. It helps people understand why food safety matters, what can go wrong and the practical steps they can take every day to help protect customers and your business.

How Long Is The Qualification Valid?
The Highfield Level 2 Award in Food Safety for Catering does not have a set expiry date.
That doesn’t mean your food safety knowledge should stand still. Good practice, workplace procedures and legal requirements can change, so it’s important to keep your knowledge fresh and make sure you’re still working safely and confidently.
At Envesca, we recommend refresher training every three years. It’s a useful opportunity to revisit the essentials, pick up any changes and reinforce the good food safety practices you use every day.
If your role, workplace or procedures change significantly, it may be sensible to refresh your training sooner.
How You'll Be Assessed And Certified
At the end of the Level 2 Food Safety for Catering course, you’ll complete a 20-question multiple-choice examination. You’ll have up to 45 minutes to complete it and will need to answer at least 13 out of 20 questions correctly to pass. The qualification is graded as pass or fail.
Your completed examination will be sent to Highfield for marking. Once we receive your result and certificate from Highfield, we’ll send them to the person who originally booked the training.
When you successfully complete the assessment, you’ll receive the Highfield Level 2 Award in Food Safety for Catering (RQF), giving you recognised evidence of your understanding of essential food safety and hygiene practices in a catering environment.
