What Will You Gain?
By the end of the Level 2 Food Safety for Manufacturing course, you’ll have a clearer understanding of the food safety and hygiene practices you need to follow in a manufacturing environment.
You’ll learn how to maintain good personal hygiene, keep work areas and equipment clean, prevent contamination and cross-contamination, control food temperatures and handle food safely during storage, preparation, processing, packing and transport. You’ll also understand how to recognise and report food safety hazards, pest activity and food spoilage.

Who Should Attend?
The Level 2 Food Safety for Manufacturing course is ideal for people who handle, prepare, process, pack or store food as part of their job in a food manufacturing environment.
It is suitable for employees working across a wide range of food and drink manufacturing operations, including fresh food processing, convenience food production, canning and bottling, and temperature-controlled processing and packaging.
If you work in a manufacturing environment but do not routinely handle food, for example in a lower-risk support role, our Level 1 Food Safety for Manufacturing course may be a more appropriate starting point.
Food safety training should reflect the environment you actually work in. If you work in catering, our Level 2 Food Safety for Catering course would be the better choice. If you work in food retail, choose our Level 2 Food Safety for Retail course instead.
Why’s It Important?
Good food safety in manufacturing depends on everyone who handles food understanding the part they play in keeping it safe. Simple things such as good personal hygiene, effective cleaning, preventing contamination and controlling temperatures all help protect the food being produced.
Food businesses need to make sure employees who handle food receive appropriate food safety training and supervision for the work they do. The Highfield syllabus also covers food handlers’ responsibilities for following food safety procedures, reporting illness and raising concerns when something could put food safety at risk.
The Level 2 Food Safety for Manufacturing course gives food handlers the practical knowledge they need to work safely throughout production, from delivery and storage through to processing, packing and transport.
Good training is not simply about meeting a requirement. It helps people understand what can go wrong, what they need to look out for and the practical steps they can take every day to help keep food safe.
They also need to understand the powers of enforcement and what they need to do to prevent the risk of prosecution. Furthermore, it is your responsibility to ensure they gain the knowledge and the skills required.
Failing to comply with these regulations can carry heavy penalties in the way of fines, poor staff morale, loss of business, a bad reputation and possibly even imprisonment.

How Long Is The Qualification Valid?
The Highfield Level 2 Award in Food Safety for Manufacturing does not have a set expiry date. The current Highfield specification does not state a renewal or requalification period.
That doesn’t mean your food safety knowledge should stand still. Good practice, workplace procedures and legal requirements can change, so it’s important to keep your knowledge fresh and make sure you’re still working safely and confidently.
At Envesca, we recommend refresher training every three years. It’s a useful opportunity to revisit the essentials, pick up any changes and reinforce the good food safety practices you use every day.
If your role, workplace or procedures change significantly, it may be sensible to refresh your training sooner.
How You'll Be Assessed And Certified
At the end of the Level 2 Food Safety for Manufacturing course, you’ll complete a 20-question multiple-choice examination. You’ll have up to 45 minutes to complete it and will need to answer at least 13 out of 20 questions correctly to pass. The qualification is graded as pass or fail.
Your completed examination will be sent to Highfield for marking. Once we receive your result and certificate from Highfield, we’ll send them to the person who originally booked the training.
When you successfully complete the assessment, you’ll receive the Highfield Level 2 Award in Food Safety for Manufacturing (RQF), giving you recognised evidence of your understanding of essential food safety and hygiene practices in a manufacturing environment.
