Highfield Level 1 Food Safety for Manufacturing
What’s It About?
This Level 1 Food Safety for Manufacturing course gives you a clear introduction to the basic food safety practices you need when working in a low-risk food manufacturing role.
You’ll learn about good personal hygiene, keeping work areas and equipment clean, preventing contamination and handling food safely. You’ll also look at how food can become contaminated by physical, chemical, allergenic and microbiological hazards, and the simple steps you can take to help prevent problems.
The course is designed to help you understand your own responsibilities for food safety and give you the confidence to follow good hygiene practices throughout the manufacturing process, from the arrival of ingredients through to despatch.
What Will You Gain?
By the end of the Level 1 Food Safety for Manufacturing course, you’ll have a clearer understanding of the basic food safety and hygiene practices you need to follow in a manufacturing environment.
You’ll learn how to maintain good personal hygiene, keep work areas and equipment clean, and help prevent physical, chemical, allergenic and microbiological contamination. You’ll also understand the part you play in keeping food safe throughout the manufacturing process.
Most importantly, you’ll return to work better prepared to follow safe food handling procedures, recognise potential food safety problems and report anything that could put food safety at risk.
Who Should Attend?
The Level 1 Food Safety for Manufacturing course is ideal for people working in low-risk roles within a food manufacturing environment where there is some food handling, such as stock or storeroom staff.
It is also a useful starting point for people who are new to food manufacturing or have little or no previous food safety knowledge and need a clear introduction to good hygiene and safe working practices.
If your role involves preparing, processing or handling food more directly, our Level 2 Food Safety for Manufacturing course would usually be the more appropriate option.
Food safety training should reflect the environment you actually work in, which is why there are separate Level 1 courses for different sectors. If you work in catering or retail, our Level 1 Food Safety for Catering or Level 1 Food Safety in Retail course would be the better choice.
Why’s It Important?
UK food manufacturing is legally governed by the Food Safety Act 1990, retained EU regulations, and the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013.
Good food safety in manufacturing depends on everyone understanding the part they play in keeping food safe, even if they work in a low-risk role.
Food businesses are required to make sure food handlers are supervised, instructed and/or trained in food hygiene in a way that is appropriate to the work they do. The Food Standards Agency also makes clear that the level of training should reflect the employee’s duties and the risks associated with their role.
The Level 1 Food Safety for Manufacturing course gives employees a practical introduction to the basic hygiene practices they need to follow, including personal hygiene, cleaning, preventing contamination and reporting food safety problems.
Good training is not simply about meeting a legal requirement. It helps people understand why food safety matters, what they need to look out for and what to do if something doesn’t seem right.

How Long Is The Qualification Valid?

However, food safety procedures, workplace practices and the way food is handled can change over time, so it’s important to keep your knowledge up to date.
We’d recommend refresher training when there are changes to your role, workplace or food safety procedures, or simply when you feel your knowledge and confidence would benefit from a refresh.
How You'll Be Assessed And Certified
At the end of the Level 1 Food Safety for Manufacturing course, you’ll complete a 15-question multiple-choice examination. You’ll have up to 30 minutes to complete it and will need to answer at least 10 out of 15 questions correctly to pass. The qualification is graded as pass or fail.
