What is the IOSH qualification?

Safety in the workplace is a vital component of a successful business, which is why keeping staff up to speed with the latest rules, regulations and advice around health and safety is so important. There are many ways that you can educate operators, specialists and managers on the importance of workplace health and safety, but one of the best is using an accredited training course.

The Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has developed an innovative 3-day course called IOSH Managing Safely, which is designed with management in mind. It is a market-leading health and safety course that empowers managers with the tools and knowledge they need to create a safer working environment.

Available as either an IOSH Managing Safely course in the classroom or an interactive IOSH Managing Safely course online via Zoom or Microsoft Teams. This course has been developed to improve safety awareness across multiple industries and workplaces. The course has been running for over 25 years with great success and delivers exceptional results for employers and staff alike.

What is the IOSH Managing Safely Qualification?

The IOSH Managing Safely course has been intelligently designed to educate managers and provide them with technical knowledge and skills to improve health and safety at work. This includes learning effective techniques that can be applied to multiple industries and assessments to show what has been learned throughout the course. All assessments are based in the real world and offer a practical way to test participants. By completing this course, candidates will receive a qualification in managing health and safety.

A green directional sign with the word Qualifications pointing to the right against a partly cloudy sky subtly introduces the question, "What is the IOSH qualification?" The IOSH logo appears three times on the left side, emphasizing its significance.

Some of the topics that are covered on the Managing Safely course include:

Learning how to identify hazards

The IOSH course will teach learners about the various types of hazards that are found in workplaces, including mechanical, physical, chemical, biological, environmental and organisational hazards. This includes hazards from industry-specific perspectives such as their location, the substances they work with and specialist equipment that they use.

Assessing and controlling risks in the workplace

Knowing how to identify and perform risks assessments in the workplace can save lives and prevent accidents. This course will show learners how to use a scoring system to identify risks and make assessments. This will highlight how easy it can be to prevent accidents at work with consistent reporting and inspections.

Measuring performance in terms of health and safety

Understanding workplace processes and systems can help with health and safety performance. This course looks into various issues with health and safety including permits, using protective equipment effectively, signage and emergency protocols. It will demonstrate the significance of checking performance in these areas to lower risks.

If you have previously achieved the IOSH Managing Safely course and are just looking to refresh your qualification, IOSH offers a one-day IOSH Managing Safely Refresher Course.
